Concerns with Kingsway Ave - Facts, Findings and Future Opportunities
Following recent concerns expressed to the Chamber about Kingsway Avenue construction, we looked into some information, knowing that it was not yet on the capital construction map yet: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/76cb793789484cd886aea7a31a05c0b7; https://citymedicinehat.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/8df26928cc9f427898294d528c8805b0.
We also identified that the project is listed in the Transportation master plan to be done in the 5 to 10 year horizon: https://shapeyourcity.medicinehat.ca/transportation-master-plan
However, we still reached out to confirm our findings and find out the next steps for our members. We confirmed that the project would not be revisited until closer to the 2027-2028 business cycle at the earliest. There have been some misconceptions about the Kingsway design project, likely originating from conceptual designs that were done around 2021/22 as part of the 2023/24 budget cycle. At that time, an application for potential federal active transportation grant funding was made available during the pandemic. However, the active transportation grant funding was not successful, and the concept was shelved.
The City typically does not begin design work on a major reconstruction project, such as Kingsway, until it knows the budget will be available. However, they are always looking to engage with the community and stakeholders to gather opinions and would anticipate that there would be some early engagement before a budget item for Kingsway is submitted. They have committed to working with the Chamber once that timeframe comes closer in 2027-2028.
