Policy Matters: Growing the Sector

Canada is one of the few net exporters of ag and agri-food products. That makes our products not only vital to Canada’s economic and food security, but to that of our global partners too. Our Recommendations to Government include the much needed support Canadian Farmers, producers and industry need, along with help to expand into new markets. The Government needs to commit to predictable, science-based regulation and encourage technological adoption, along with expanding existing transportation capacity. What to find out the more in-depth recommendations - read the latest policy matters post.

Funding Resources

Increased compensation for cattle producers

The Government of Canada has updated compensation limits for cattle affected by reportable diseases. Eligible producers can now receive up to $16,500 for registered (purebred) cattle and $10,000 for non-registered cattle, reflecting current market values. This change supports early disease reporting and helps protect Canada’s food supply and export markets. Find out more.

Two key ways to maximize your AgriInvest account

There is estimated to be more than $2 billion saved in AgriInvest accounts across Canada, so it’s likely worth your time to ensure your account can be accessed, and those funds are put to good use on the farm. AgriInvest is part of the Business Risk Management program provided by a partnership between the federal and provincial governments. Each year, producers can file their Eligible Net Sales (ENS) on the prescribed form. Once assessed, producers deposit 1% of the ENS to a maximum of $1 million into an account at their financial institution. These funds will be matched by the government and deposited into the same account. Funds are designated as Producers Deposits and Government Matching Deposits and are all held in the same account at the financial institution. Designing a water system

Individual grazing management systems will impact water system design and development. Continuous, simple rotational and intensive or mob grazing systems may each require different water sources and systems. Consider the following factors:

  • grazing management system
  • herd size and animal type
  • site characteristics and availability of water sources
  • season of use
  • proximity to electricity or alternate power source
  • cost to install, maintain and operate
  • labour and time to check the system
  • desired flexibility – portable system, trough, water tanker, shallow pipelines

Canadian Beef Research and Knowledge Mobilization Survey

The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) is in the process of renewing its five-year Canadian Beef Research and Technology Transfer Strategy (Research & Knowledge Mobilization Strategy). This strategy will highlight Canada’s beef research and knowledge mobilization priorities and will be instrumental in guiding industry and government investments at both national and provincial levels across multiple funding agencies. BCRC’s Research & Knowledge Mobilization Strategy will also align with Canada’s National Beef Strategy and the Canadian Beef Advisors' ten-year goals. Take the Survey before September 4.

Cropping Alternatives (Crop Budget Planning) now available online

Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation has released the 2025 Cropping Alternatives (Crop Budget Planning), which is an essential resource to support farm-level decision-making across the province.

This annual Crop Budget Planning is tailored to specific soil zones and covers a broad range of dryland and irrigated crops and forages. It includes estimated costs and returns for the 2025 growing season, which can be customized to reflect the unique production, pricing, and cost factors of individual farming operations.
