Leading Change: Domestic Violence & Your Workplace
As part of Family Violence Prevention Month this November, The Medicine Hat Women's Shelter Society and Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce are partnering to offer this 90-minute training and information session to Chamber Members.
Created by the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters and facilitated locally by the Medicine Hat Women's Shelter Society this free training will provide a general overview of what domestic violence is, what employer responsibilities are within the Occupational Health & Safety Act, how everyone can work to build a safe work environment along with what local resources and supports are available.
Some Facts and Stats:
-Domestic Violence is recognized as a workplace hazard in the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act
-The cost of domestic violence to organizations in Alberta averages $110,000 per year, per 100 employees. (Better Business Solutions, 2010. corrected for inflation.)
-53.5% of those who have experienced domestic violence reported that the abusive acts continued at or near their workplace.
-90% of domestic violence victims will disclose to a co-worker.
-74% of victims use work time and resources to deal with being harassed at work by a current or former partner.
