About
The Medicine Hat & District Food Bank works collaboratively in the community of Medicine Hat and surrounding area to ensure an adequate and accessible food support system is available to individuals and families in need. This is achieved through support in Emergency Crisis, Security, and Sustainability.
The Medicine Hat & District Food Bank believes that Food Banks don’t work in their current form. Going forward we will continue to be focusing on helping clients become food secure through access to various resources that will be centralized at our new location at 440 Maple ave Se. The new concept comes with a new name: “Root Cellar, Food and Wellness Hub”. At the Root Cellar, staff and volunteers will strive to address the root of the problems that cause food insecurity.
The goal of the Root Cellar isn’t just to feed people today, but to use food as a way to connect people to resources that will help eliminate the need for emergency food aid. By addressing addiction, mental health issues, financial literacy, isolation, and cooking and budgeting skills - all in one place - the Root Cellar will allow the majority of its clients to graduate from its services permanently.
Our Emergency food pantry services will always be available at the Root Cellar, as will the brown bag lunch program, and United Way healthy bundles for expectant mothers, but the Root Cellar will focus on a holistic approach to lifting clients out of poverty. Shifting to a vision of the space that includes community kitchens, community space sharing, gardens and greenhouses, and a food market that welcomes all locals and encourages social mixity.
We are so excited to welcome the community into this new space once it is safe to do so barring covid-19 protocols. If you, your business or organization would like to inquire about a tour or find out how to get involved please email marketing@mhrootcellar.com
