The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games brought millions in new economic activity to the Medicine Hat area.

The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce is commending the Games as a tremendous success. The Games wrap up with a closing ceremony Saturday night after five days of competition.

“The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games represent far more than a sporting event,” said executive director Lisa Dressler. “They showcase the tremendous ability of the athletes, it has showcased our community to the entire country.”

In addition to the athletic achievements and community pride created by the Games, the event has generated significant economic activity.

The chamber estimates the event has generated millions of dollars in direct spending to hotels, restaurants, retailers, transportation providers, attractions and local service businesses throughout the region.

The total estimated economic impact is $12 million.

“Every filled hotel room, restaurant visit, fuel purchase, retail transaction and local attraction visit represents new dollars coming into our community,” said Dressler. “That spending supports local jobs, strengthens businesses, and reinforces the value of investing in initiatives that attract visitors to southeast Alberta.”
