CFSEA’s Rural Futures Report Calls for Action to Address Urgent Needs Across Southeastern Alberta
MEDICINE HAT, July 9, 2025 – The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta (CFSEA) has released Rural Futures: Regional Development and Conversations in Southeastern Alberta, a comprehensive report detailing urgent priorities and opportunities facing rural communities across the region.
“This is more than a report launch, it’s a call to action for solutions shaped by rural communities, for rural communities,” said Niki Gray, Executive Director, Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta. “When we listen deeply and collaborate across sectors, we can create meaningful change that reflects the lived experiences of people throughout Southeastern Alberta.”
Developed through extensive engagement in non-urban communities, Rural Futures reflects the voices of residents and organizations across Southeastern Alberta. CFSEA held focus groups, surveys, and local consultations—connecting directly with residents and organizations outside major urban centres to understand their concerns, priorities, and ideas for a stronger future.
Based on these conversations, key findings include:
• Over 40 per cent of rural residents face barriers accessing timely health care, with mental health supports identified as a particular gap.
• A 25 per cent shortage of affordable rental housing in key communities, impacting families and workforce retention.
• Ongoing challenges attracting and keeping skilled workers, limiting economic growth and service capacity.
• Rising costs straining local charities and service providers, threatening the sustainability of vital programs.
• A lack of transportation options and social supports contributing to isolation, especially among seniors and vulnerable populations.
The report goes beyond identifying challenges, offering a clear roadmap of actionable recommendations for stakeholders to collaboratively address these issues over the short and long term.
The findings were the focus of the Rural Futures: Virtual Engagement Experience held July 2, 2025, where municipal leaders, non-profit organizations, CFSEA staff, volunteers and community partners gathered to discuss priorities and co-create practical next steps. Guest speakers included Lisa Tiffin, Director of Planning & Community Development for the City of Brooks, and Mitchell Iwaasa, Economic Development Officer for the City of Brooks.
Glen Motz, MP for Medicine Hat–Cardston–Warner, sent a video message recognizing the importance of this work.
“I really appreciate the work that the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta is doing,” said Motz. “Rural communities are much different than our urban counterparts, and they deserve focused attention to ensure we address them properly.”
Wanda Diakow, Economic Development Officer at the Special Areas Board and a participant in the event, emphasized the importance of learning from peers across the region.
“These conversations are vital—not just for sharing ideas, but for learning from other communities facing similar challenges. Rural issues won’t solve themselves, and it’s through open dialogue and collaboration that we can move forward together.”
The report also highlights how changing funding landscapes are increasing demands on municipalities and local organizations. Addressing these challenges will require coordinated action and sustained investment across community partners and all levels of government.
